The state office that licenses insurers and agents and handles consumer complaints. It can look into problems like claim delays or unfair treatment, but it does not act as your lawyer.

This is the least coverage the law requires. It often isn’t enough to pay for a serious accident, and anything above your limits can come out of your own pocket.

These state-established programs cover homes that private insurers won’t. They’re meant as a last resort: coverage is often more limited and can cost more, so shop the private market and ask an agent first. Eligibility rules vary.

Colorado FAIR Plan FAIR Plan
Basic coverage for homes and belongings against fire, lightning and smoke, paid at actual cash value, with some optional added coverages such as wind and hail.
Where: Statewide. You must show that insurers have turned you down.
